AliExpress star ratings are gamed. Heavily. Sellers send discount coupons in exchange for 5-star reviews, use review farms to bulk-load positive feedback, or buy from themselves through proxy accounts. The APS algorithm was built specifically to detect and discount this:
- Review velocity analysis — a spike of 200 reviews in 3 days on a 2-year-old listing is a red flag, not social proof. APS weights steady, distributed review acquisition.
- Dispute rate cross-reference — sellers with high-rated products but rising dispute rates are flagged. Dispute rate is harder to fake than star ratings.
- Order pattern scoring — products with thousands of orders but very few repeat buyers in the same region score lower. Repeat buying behavior is a stronger quality signal than total volume.
